Every dandelion in your lawn has the capability to produce 15,000 seeds that could germinate and infest your lawn with even more of those ugly, yellow nutrient hogs. Fortunately, our 5-step program of fertilizer and weed control can harshly interrupt this cycle, knocking down much of the dandelion population.
Our 1st application consists of a crabgrass pre-emergent mixed with fertilizer, typically applied in early Spring. These crabgrass pre-emergents are labeled to prevent some broadleaf weeds such as spurge and purslane. However, they do not prevent dandelions! Using a dandelion pre-emergent is often a waste of time, money, and effort due to the fact that dandelions are perennials. They keep their taproot over winter and come back the next spring. A pre-emergent can do nothing to stop this, because the dandelion is already established. It would be kind of like putting a lock on your front door while the robber you're trying to prevent is already behind you on the sofa. Useless on any dandelions waiting in the soil already. Sure, it could prevent some brand-new dandelions from popping up, but at what cost? Using multiple pre-emergents for crabgrass, dandelions, etc., can cause unnecessary stress to your soil and turf. This overuse of pre-emergent chemical could make your lawn start off even worse in Spring and stay dormant for longer. A better option is applying post-emergence herbicides throughout the growing season. It takes less of a toll on the turf, and gets those dandelions gone within days.
Here at Weed Wrangler, our 2nd application (applied in Spring or early Summer depending on climate) consists of fertilizer and a post-emergence spray of the entire lawn to kill any weeds present. We continue our applications on a regular basis, keeping your lawn free of weeds throughout the entire season. After some years of applying fertilizer and weed control, space for weeds will be squeezed out, and you will likely have less weeds showing up each year in the future. And when any weeds do show up, you can guarantee Weed Wrangler will be there to knock them down.
